Cheap Surfaces for Decorative Painting

Monday, February 14th, 2011

I like decorative painting, but it can be an expensive hobby. When I start painting, I was very excited about all the beautiful wood surface on the market like boxes and furniture and small sculptures. Unfortunately it was not long before I found that I can not paint nearly as much as I want because I can not afford to buy all these wonderful pieces. So I started looking for cheap paint surface of my decorating.

And I found many sources. First I started looking at rummage sales. I found an old, round night stand that was in rather rough shape but solid. And I found an ugly but interesting jewelry box. It is just amazing what a little sand paper, wood filler and paint can do to transform something undesirable into a beautiful piece of art.

Two of my uncles died recently and my siblings and I inherited all their stuff. There were several items that I grabbed up quick like a wooden stool and a large wooden bowl.

My husband and I often stop at flea markets and once in a while I can find something interesting. Once I found a tackle box that I painted with a cool fish and lots of lures and gave it to my son who is an avid fisherman. In my grandma’s attic I found an old cheese box. You know, the old round, wooden box with a lid. That now has a beautiful floral picture around it.

Second time around shops are good places to visit as are auctions and estate sales. And then there are the outlet stores and overstock. I have found that many items. Most work is done in Taiwan or somewhere overseas, but the only one. Just be sure to use a good stain blocking paint is not cheap to the wound bleeds through and ruin your artwork.

Store basement discount counters are another good place to browse for discontinued items or returns. I can usually find small furniture items here. And one more place to check out is the on-line auctions. You never know what you might find. So don’t give up painting because you can’t buy new surfaces. Find your own unique pieces and put your special touch on it.
